- The Turners Falls Power Canal construction began in 1866. A 3000 foot-long "strip" 50 feet wide and ten feet deep is built from this point shown in the image. By 1903 the Turners Falls Company realized it was necessary to widen and lengthen the canal to accommodate the water requirements to power the waterwheels of the mill;s being added to the west shoreline of the canal. The extensive excavation project begins at the east end of the existing canal. The building in the rear is that of the Clark & Chapman Machine Co.. The Connecticut River flows beyond the machine co. building.

- Excavation is shown in this ancient photo., The location is along the east bank of the canal directly below the Clark & Chapman Machine Co. machine shop which is now moved from its location at the canal bulkhead that is shown in the previous item. The former machine shop is presently home to the Discovery Center Great Hall. A function of the Massachusetts Dept. of Conservation and Recreation.
