Jan. 6, 85 [1885] -- My dear Witten, -- Your favor enclosing the [H Bill] annual just at hand for which accept the sincere thanks of the Keith and myself. -- I hope you experience no ill effect from “the Crow Dinner”. I stood it well until I came to the half dollar cigar. It was a grim experiment of friend Barton. The invention of the enemy – to tempt the weak stomach of a democrat who had been out of office for twenty four years and reduced to the simple frugality of a five cent Connecticut .
